Area teams earn second-season bids

A total of four Roanoke Valley teams earned playoff assignments on Thursday when the N.C. High School Athletic Association released its statewide draw.

KIPP Pride (14-4) leads the 1A contingent against Roxboro Community (14-7), while Weldon (12-4) treks to Hillsborough for a clash with Eno River Academy (12-7).

Southeast Collegiate (9-7) also made the 1A bash, and is scheduled to appear as the guest of Falls Lake (15-7).

Roanoke Rapids (12-5), which earned a second-place tie in the highly competitive Big East 2A/3A Conference, will host longtime rival Bunn (12-5) when play commences on Saturday.

First serve is slated for noon at Talley Gym.


Yellow Jackets blank Bulldogs

Coleman Neal scored a goal and brokered two others on Wednesday as Roanoke Rapids booked 3-0 victory over Big East 2A/3A guest Nash Central.

The black-and-gold finished the regular season with an 11-4-2 overall mark, including eight wins in league play.

Shep Fowler and Balmoris Gonzalez also played well for the hosts, finishing with one assist apiece.

RRHS will earn a bid to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A postseason next week, while Nash Central finished the 2021 campaign with just three wins.

Phoenix rise, book first-round W

RALEIGH — Paced by junior Keerthi Avula, Raleigh Charter cruised to a 6-0 victory over Roanoke Rapids on Wednesday during opening-round play of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A playoffs.
